Mitigation Action Facility project drives innovative low-carbon transformation in Honduras’ Livestock Sector
With support and financing from the Mitigation Action Facility, the Honduras Livestock project (“Transforming the Honduran livestock sector towards a low-carbon economy”) promotes a resilient, profitable, and low-emission livestock production model.
The transformation is driven by a comprehensive approach combining specialised technical assistance and a climate finance mechanism. Together, these tools enable producers to access knowledge, technology, and funding to implement sustainable livestock practices.
The project is led by the Secretariat of Natural Resources and Environment (SERNA) and the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), with technical support from CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center).
Overcoming barriers to a sustainable livestock future
Since its launch in 2023, the Honduras Livestock project has worked to address the financial, technical, and cultural barriers that hinder the adoption of sustainable livestock systems. By combining field-based technical support with tailored climate finance solutions, the project seeks to enable a sector-wide transition to low-emission, climate-resilient, and economically viable livestock production in key regions across the country.
Climate finance in action: new tools, new opportunities
At a recent multi-stakeholder event, the project introduced its new climate finance mechanism, a major step toward unlocking investment for sustainable livestock technologies. Backed by the Honduran Bank for Production and Housing (BANHPROVI), this mechanism will improve access to credit for small and medium-sized livestock producers, enabling them to invest in solutions like:
- Renewable energy
- Manure management
- Living fences
- Water harvesting systems
By reducing risks through strategic partnerships, this instrument is expected to catalyse change at scale.

The event also celebrated the launch of the technical support team that will deliver field assistance through Farmer Field Schools (Escuelas de Campo – ECA). These participatory training platforms are designed to strengthen local capacities and drive on-the-ground change.
Recognition was given to 25 professionals who helped develop the training curriculum and accompanying materials to support technical staff throughout project implementation.
The event coincided with the meeting of the project’s steering committee, composed of representatives from BANHPROVI, SAG, SERNA, FENAGH, and CATIE. The committee reviewed progress and aligned plans for the second half of 2025.

Joint governance and international support
Progress reviewed by national partners and highlighted by the presence of German Embassy representative Ignacius Villar de Rohde. The Deputy Head of the German Embassy in Honduras expressed strong support and was impressed by the project’s progress and its contribution to the country’s vital livestock sector.
Scaling Impact: toward a greener, more resilient livestock sector
Over the coming years, the Honduras Livestock project will continue to scale up sustainable livestock practices with the potential for high impact on emissions reduction, climate resilience, and livelihoods. With continued support from the Mitigation Action Facility and close collaboration with national stakeholders, the project will expand its reach to new regions – consolidating low-carbon livestock farming as a cornerstone of sustainable rural development in Honduras.
