Insights from the Transport and Climate Change Week 2025: How the Mitigation Action Facility supports Transport Transformation
From September 24–26, 2025, the Technical Support Unit (TSU) of the Mitigation Action Facility, represented by Ulrich Tokam and Alexandra Neubert, participated in the Transport and Climate Change Week (TCCW) 2025 in Berlin, Germany. Organised by GIZ under the theme ‘Time to Be Accountable: Showcasing Achievements, Driving Transformation’, the annual flagship event brought together international delegations, government representatives, development partners, private sector actors, and NGOs.
While the first two days were dedicated to training sessions for GIZ partners, the Mitigation Action Facility’s engagement began with the Transport Week Symposium on Thursday, 25 September.
For the Mitigation Action Facility, the conference was a strategic opportunity to showcase its growing transport portfolio, raise awareness about funding opportunities, and contribute to global discussions on how climate finance can accelerate sustainable transport.

Highlights from TCCW 2025
On Thursday, 25 September, the Symposium opened with the session “Targeting Transport Decarbonisation: What is Needed up to 2025?” In her keynote, Ms. Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter, Parliamentary State Secretary at BMUKN, reiterated the importance of TCCW and stressed that “the key challenge now is to connect climate ambition with industrial transformation and societal needs. To achieve this, it is essential to invest in climate action, drive industrial transformation, and ensure the successful transition of the transport sector.”

That same day, the side event “Adapting Urban Mobility Systems to Climate Change Through Strategic Planning”, hosted by MobiliseYourCity, Codatu, and RESALLIENCE, presented the nine principles for building resilient and sustainable transport systems. Sasank Vemuri, Head of the MobiliseYourCity Partnership Secretariat and Director of the TUMI Just Mobility Program, underlined the need for strategies that integrate both adaptation and mitigation and called for stronger flows of climate finance, particularly for the Global South.

On Friday, 26 September, the Africa Regional Exchange “Accountability in Motion: Linking National and Regional Impact in the Transition to Net-Zero Mobility” brought together delegations from Cabo Verde, Kenya, Morocco, Rwanda, Senegal, and other African countries. A highlight was the presentation of Dakar’s pioneering electric Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project by Ms. Marie Thiam from the Conseil Exécutif des Transports Urbains Durables (CETUD), who shared valuable lessons on designing, financing, and implementing transformative BRT systems, with particular emphasis on the project’s gender action plan.

Later that day, the Mitigation Action Facility hosted its own side event, “Advancing Climate Finance for Transport,” which convened around 27 participants from governments, private sector representatives, UN agencies, and NGOs. The session introduced the Facility’s mission and portfolio, shared insights from the recent Transport Sector Workshop held in June 2025 and featured a case study on the Cabo Verde Electric Vehicles project (ProMEC), presented by Ms. Diana Dolores. Discussions highlighted eligibility requirements, funding ticket sizes, and the pivotal role of the private sector. The session concluded with a clear message: “Transport must make its claim for climate finance to leverage investment from private actors.”
What we learned: Key takeaways from TCCW
TCCW 2025 reinforced that transport transformation requires a dual approach, embedding adaptation alongside mitigation strategies, and that gender-sensitive and inclusive planning must be central to project design. For the Mitigation Action Facility, the week validated the importance of strengthening local partnerships, private sector engagement, and regional knowledge exchange. Concrete outcomes of the Facility’s participation included:
- Provided participants with a clearer understanding of the Mitigation Action Facility’s funding approach and eligibility criteria, including lessons from past applications
- Showcased best practices on how to better engage the private sector in transport decarbonisation, highlighting its role in driving transformation.
- Raised interest in new applications for the Mitigation Action Facility’s upcoming 2026 Calls for Projects.
Looking ahead
The Mitigation Action Facility’s participation in the Transport and Climate Change Week 2025 helped amplify its message on transport decarbonisation, resilience, and climate finance. As the Facility continues to engage in such events, stakeholders are invited to connect with the Facility, explore funding opportunities, and contribute to advancing sustainable transport transformation.
