Accelerating climate action in transport: Highlights from the Mitigation Action Facility Sector Workshop in Nairobi
From 17–19 June 2025, the Technical Support Unit (TSU) of the Mitigation Action Facility hosted a vibrant Transport Sector Workshop in Nairobi, Kenya. The three-day event brought together Implementing Organisations (IOs) and international partners to reflect on progress, enhance project design, and chart new paths for climate action in the transport sector.
Peer learning, insights, and implementation support
The first two days were dedicated on the seven active Mitigation Action Facility-supported transport projects – five in implementation and two in the Detailed Preparation Phase (DPP). Participants engaged in peer-to-peer learning, knowledge sharing, and critical reflection on project achievements and challenges.
Key themes included aligning project design with ambitions for systemic change, financial sustainability, and implementation readiness. Participants appreciated the interactive approach and open exchange across regions and project cycle.
Day 1 highlights: Storytelling and financial tools in action
- In a dynamic Pecha Kucha session, each project shared a five-minute story highlighting their journey – from local challenges to policy reform, and scalable solutions.
- A standout session on Financial Mechanisms sparked lively dialogue. Key takeaways: financial tools must grounded in reality; early mapping of administrative steps and stakeholder buy-in is essential; and blended finance works best when paired with capacity building and awareness.
- Participants visited ROAM’s e-Bus and
e-Motorbike assembly plant and ARC Ride’s battery swapping stations , observing practical innovations like Battery-as-a-Service and insights into scaling e-mobility.ns, observing practical innovations like Battery-as-a-Service and insights into scaling e-mobility.

Day 2 highlights: What makes climate projects in transport transformational?
- Deep Dive 1: Reflecting on what works
Projects that are embedded in national priorities and supported by strong local leadership are more likely to overcome implementation barriers and achieve lasting impact. Peer exchanges underscored the importance of fostering enabling policy environments and translating alignment into actionable steps – many of which are already underway.
- Deep Dive 2: Strengthening our project design toolbox
Effective project design requires the right tools and long-term thinking. Meaningful stakeholder engagement, adaptive planning, and early efforts to secure political buy-in emerged as essential ingredients for designing transport interventions that are both scalable and resilient.
- Deep Dive 3: Exploring new avenues for climate action
Insights from current e-mobility projects can help shape future engagement in hard-to-abate sectors such as freight, maritime, and aviation. Participants stressed the importance of building on existing innovation and identifying enabling conditions early to extend decarbonisation efforts across transport modes.

Day 3: Partnership event – decarbonising transport together
The final day convened 12 organisations for a solution-focused dialogue between implementers and external experts. Discussions highlighted:
- Tailored solutions are key
From freight corridors to last-mile mobility, success depends on contextual understanding and grounded stakeholder engagement.
- Innovation needs incentives
While tech exists, scaling requires agile financing and better alignment between innovation and investment. - Mitigation Action Facility as a first mover
MAF’s role as a first mover was reaffirmed – derisking, accelerating, and bridging the gap between early innovation and large-scale deployment.

Looking ahead
As our transport portfolio grows, we remain committed to advancing locally anchored, scalable climate solutions. Stay tuned for more updates on how we continue to support transformative action in sustainable transport.
